Nerida NettlebeckMatrix on Board is a management support company for the not-for-profit sector. Managing Director Nerida Nettelbeck, has over a twenty years experience in the not-for-profit sector working in finance, management, executive and Board positions. Nerida has spent much of her twenty year career demystifying financial information to help all levels of management to build their capacity to deliver high quality, financially sustainable social services. Prior to joining Matrix, Nerida held the position of CEO at WCIG, a large community based RTO and employment services organisation in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs where she led the development of a strategic planning framework that included board members and senior management and staff, resulting in staged growth and improved financial capacity.  Nerida oversaw the operations of three social enterprises and was instrumental in the establishment of two social firms providing her with a solid grounding in social enterprise development.

Nerida believes in the ability of not-for-profit organisations to adopt business practices to enhance their organisational objectives without compromising their social values.

Mary Nguyen
Mary NguyenVibewire Youth, Australia

Mary is one half of the dynamic duo that runs Vibewire Youth Inc., a non-profit youth organisation. Vibewire runs innovative media and entrepreneurship programs & events, and an Enterprise Hub in Ultimo Sydney where young creative and social entrepreneurs incubate their projects.Originally from Melbourne, she moved to Sydney to pursue a career in media, and is currently finishing her Masters of Arts Journalism at the University of Technology Sydney.  She has had varied work experience, such as ABC Radio National, Dumbofeather magazine and ran the newsroom for projecteye.org, the youth website that provided news coverage of World Youth Day 2008 in conjunction with SBS.

Jeremy Nicholls
Jeremy NichollsSROI Network, UK

Jeremy Nicholls is the chief executive of the SROI Network which is a membership organisation for those interested in social return on investment. Starting out as an accountant, his work has increasingly focused on finding ways for organisations to better understand and then manage the social value they create. In 2000 he set up the Cat’s Pyjamas to support and advocate social enterprise and shortly after started working on the development of SROI. He wrote’ There is no business like Social Business’ with Liam Black  and he co-wrote the recent Cabinet Office ‘Guide to SROI’  He is the chair of FairPensions, a director of the FRC Group and an occasional lecturer on social value at Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

Jan OwenJan Owen AM

Jan Owen AM has been an Executive Director of Social Ventures Australia (SVA) since 2002. Prior to this, Jan was Founder and inaugural Chief Executive of the CREATE Foundation. She has more than 25 years experience in the non profit sector, including establishing and operating numerous organisations and cross-sectoral partnerships. Jan serves on the boards of Social Firms Australia, the CREATE Foundation, the International Women’s Development Agency, Inspire Foundation and the International Board of Advisors of the Medical Knowledge Foundation. She is the author of “Every Childhood Lasts a Lifetime” (1996).

Robert Pekin

Robert Pekin is a farmer, horticulturalist, social entrepreneur and founder of Brisbane-based Food Connect, Australia’s largest and most successful Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) Scheme. This Social Business is an exciting model that provides dignified and secure livelihoods for Small Farmers & Employees and develops local food resilience for Australian Communities. Robert is on the world committee of URGENCI and is one of the pioneers in a revolution to radically change how food is produced and distributed.  He is also a founding member of Ecological Agriculture Australia and is on a national Land & Water task force set up by the Former Governor General.

Duncan PeppercornDuncan Peppercorn

Duncan leads the SVA Consulting team. He has seven years of experience working with the international strategic consultancies McKinsey & Company and Bain & Company, and five years working as an independent consultant before joining SVA. Duncan has supported clients in resources, construction materials, consumer goods, telecoms, industrial products and financial services, as well as social enterprises and the arts. He holds an MA (Hons) from Cambridge University.

John Perry

John PerryJohn Perry is the General Manager of Employment, Education and Training for BoysTown. He has more then 31 years of management experience in the Government and Non-Government sectors, mainly in the areas of employment, training and welfare. John has worked as a Senior Manager with BoysTown for over 12 years and also a Senior Manager with the Commonwealth Department of Employment for 20 years. He currently holds positions as a Board member for the Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (MSIT) and the Australian Training Company (ATC). He has extensive experience in governance gained through directorships in a number of non-profit and vocational training organisations. John’s experience in the employment and training sector includes the development of industry specific training, recruitment and employment programs, the development of innovative solutions to skills in demand and the development of social enterprises.

The enterprises he has developed are intermediate labour market responses to employment barriers for disadvantaged young people.

Sue Peters

Sue Peters is Director, Investments at the Social Investment Business in England. The SIB is the largest social investor in the UK running government backed funds including the Adventure Capital, Futurebuilders and Communitybuilders Funds, and has more than £400m (950mAUS$) under management. Our vision is to help create a powerful, well capitalised and thriving third sector that will improve the lives of people and their communities.Sue’s background is in commercial banking, where she dealt with organisations ranging from small local businesses to multinational corporations. Her experience covers all aspects of an investment relationship, from deal making to recoveries. 

She joined the group in 2005 and has been an integral part in its development from £15m to £400m in four years.

Jimmy Pham
KOTO International, Vietnam

Jimmy PhamJimmy’s KOTO journey started on the streets of his native Vietnam, when after 22 years abroad, he was shocked by the poverty and hopelessness facing the country’s youth.  Knowing he must act, Jimmy opened a small sandwich shop in Hanoi and employed 9 street kids. KOTO has since grown to become a 120-seat restaurant, registered charity and vocational training program with over 200 graduates.  KOTO (Know One, Teach One) teaches hospitality and life skills, and is built on the philosophy of ensuring disadvantaged youth have opportunity, skills and dignity. In 2006, Jimmy received the James Strong Outstanding Leadership Award in recognition of his work. Jimmy is currently working on replicating the KOTO model in other cities, with KOTO Ho Chi Minh City expected to open late-2009.

Jane Pound
SVA

Jane PoundJane joined SVA in 2005 and works in the Partnerships team in Melbourne on cross sector collaborations and partnerships. She has a particular interest in working with Indigenous Australia on community building initiatives. Prior to joining SVA, Jane spent 10 years working in legal and corporate advisory roles, including five years in Sydney as a senior lawyer of leading law firm Gilbert & Tobin where she specialised in mergers and acquisitions and shareholder arrangements. After beginning her career as a lawyer in Melbourne, she was appointed Senior Manager at Ernst & Young in a corporate advisory role. Jane holds degrees in law and economics from Monash University.

Kris Prendergast

Kris PendergastKris Prendergast is President and CEO of the Social Enterprise Alliance (SEA), the leading North American association providing advocacy, information, resources, and community for the field. Prior to joining SEA in 2007, Kris served as Vice President for Governance and Organisation Development at the U.S. Green Building Council, which originated the LEED rating system for green buildings. Kris helped to establish the USGBC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., pioneered an innovative governance model within the organisation, and grew the membership and the Council's chapters across the country. Kris has a M.A. in Environmental Studies and an interest in sociocracy, a system that rewires decision-making and communications within organisations.

Tamzin Ratcliffe
Global Social Investment Exchange (GSIX), South Africa

Tamzin RactliffeTammzin has worked both in South Africa and internationally in financial services for more than 20 years. She established Funding SA, a social investment services consultancy and created the first South African online social development networking platform GreaterGood South Africa which has raised in excess of R20 million in direct financial support, 5.8million surplus product items and more than 75,000 hours of volunteer time and skills. In 2006 Tamzin established the South African Social Investment Exchange (SASIX) to facilitate performance-based philanthropy and social investment whilst also leveraging larger-scale external investment in social financial offerings.  SASIX has raised over R25 million in social finance and R70 million in financial investment. For the past 18 months, Tamzin has focused on establishing The Global Federation of Social Investment Exchange - GSIX, an independent federation of national and regional social investment exchanges.

Professor Hayden Raysmith
Regional Kitchen Group, Australia

Professor Hayden Raysmith is Managing Director, WRE Pty Ltd and CEO of Regional Kitchen Group. He led the non-government sector during the early 1980’s as Executive Director of the Victorian Council of Social Service and was instrumental in the establishment of The Victorian Community Foundation and R.E. Ross House, a resource building for over 70 community organisations, located in Flinders Lane Melbourne. He was the founding chairman of Australia’s first independent community foundation, the Melbourne Community Foundation, and in 2006 was appointed chair of the board responsible for creating an arts, cultural and educational precinct on the site of the historic Abbotsford Convent. Professor Raysmith has published on a wide range of social policy issues including children’s services, health policy and community development. Since 2001 he has been engaged by the Office of Housing to assist the development and implementation of the Victorian Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal initiative. Professor Raysmith is contracted to provide mentoring services to senior staff in the Department of Human Services, local government, universities and the private sector where he also advises on corporate social responsibility. From 2006 to 2009 he was a member of the Independent Expert Community Advisory Committee established by Insurance Australia Group (IAG) to advise on triple bottom line reporting. He is also a member of an international collaborative project developing indicators of progress across economic, social, environmental, cultural and governance domains.

Wendy Reid
Wendy ReigDevelopment Trust Association, Scotland, UK

Wendy joined the Development Trusts Association Scotland, the support organisation for a fastest growing network of community enterprise practitioners, in 2004. Her expertise in the sector came from six years working for the Scottish Borders Rural Partnership and 18 months as a VSO volunteer running a rural development program supported by UNDP in Belize.  She has been a board member of Capital Credit Union, a financial co-operative based in Edinburgh with over 15,000 members, for nine years and has recently joined the board of the Galgael Trust, a community project building and sailing traditional boats in celebration of Scotland's heritage.

Kevin Robbie

Kevin RobbieKevin is responsible for supporting SVA’s efforts to develop social enterprises that create employment for people marginalised from the labour market. Kevin has over 15 years of social sector experience in the UK. He has held a number of senior management positions, including seven years as Chief Executive of Forth Sector, one of Scotland’s leading social enterprises. He has run projects and written a number of publications for the Scottish Government around measuring social added value, new approaches to social investment, tendering for public sector contracts, new approaches to commissioning public services and business development. Prior to joining SVA, Kevin was on secondment to the UK Government’s Office of the Third Sector as an advisor on both Social Return on Investment (SROI) and the role of social enterprises.

He is one of the world’s leading Place Making practitioners and passionately promotes the new story of living, playing and working in ways that support the cultural, social and environmental elements unique to each place. As one of the first Al Gore Climate Leaders, he sees the potential of Place Making to inspire a deeper environmental awareness and stewardship where people can make a difference both locally and globally. Gilbert co-founded the EPOCH Foundation, which promoted the adoption of ethical practices for Business and was seen to be a leader in its time.  He also co-founded Spiral Connection - an NGO that created alcohol, smoke and drug free dance and celebration spaces.

Matt Rockman

Matt RockmanMatt is currently an investor in early stage opportunities and community projects, which have scale and real game changing potential in the social sector. He is Chairman of the San Francisco based Nitro PDF software company. Matt has a number of investments where he is directly involved in the operations of the business. These include Max Superannuation and Wingate Group investment Bank. Prior to working as an investor in his own right, Matt was one of the three original founders of SEEK LTD.  Along With Paul and Andrew Bassat, Matt took SEEK from business plan to become one of Australia’s most successful online businesses. SEEK is an ASX 200 Listed company with a market capitalisation of $2 Billion, and with businesses in the UK, China, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.  Matt holds a Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) degree from Monash University.

Mark RuizMark Ruiz is Founding Partner and Managing Director of MicroVentures Inc . He co-founded and manages this Social Business Enterprise that works with microentrepreneurs across the Philippines from idea into growth phase. What started out as a pilot in 7 communities has now grown to 43, with a trajectory of ending the year with 150. Apart from overall strategic direction Mark is currently focused on marketing, business development, and innovation. Alongside this role Mark is Founding Partner and Vice Chairman of the social enterprise Rags2Riches, is part of the team that launched a protogype of the Ilumina, the worlds first true LCD iTV and leads an innovation advocacy forum inspiring Filipino Ingenuity, titled WhyNot?. Mark is a part time faculty member at the Ateneo de Manila, School of Management where he teaches Business Innovation Management.

Laurie RussellLaurie Russell

Laurie Russell has been Chief Executive of the Wise Group since August 2006. The Wise Group was set up in Glasgow in 1983 to support unemployed people into sustainable employment. Its annual turnover is £20 million and it employs 430 staff. In 2009 it became the only UK social enterprise to win one of the new UK government Flexible New Deal contracts, worth £140 million over five years. Laurie is Chair of the Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition. From 1989 to 2006, he managed the European Funds Programmes that invested €1,500 million in the economic and social regeneration of Western Scotland.

Tamra Ryan draws from marketing and sales experience as the CEO of Women's Bean Project. Since arriving in 2003, Tamra has transformed the non-profit from a state of financial crisis to stability.  Prior to joining the Bean Project, Tamra worked as a marketing and business development professional for small and start-up companies, including experience as an Internet marketing consultant to Fortune 500 companies such as Wal-Mart and American Express. Tamra is also a board member with Social Venture Partners-Denver, connecting philanthropists with nonprofits to maximise community impact. Tamra completed her undergraduate degree at University of Colorado in Boulder and Masters degree at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.
